There are many pathways for EU to become climate neutral by 2050, including one where fossil fuels still play a significant role as energy carriers

Under the current trends scenario (currently implemented EU policies) most models project a strong presence of fossil fuels in 2030 and 2050 (Figure 1). In the climate neutrality scenario, a fossil phase out is necessary for the required CO2 emission reduction. However, this is not the case for the IMAGE model which showcases another option to mitigate the emissions using CCS technology. In IMAGE, the renewables in combination with the CCS and BECCS result to a climate neutral Europe.
