System efficiency through district heating and cooling are important to include in modelling

Using the EnergyPLAN tool to model different scenarios of a future decarbonized European energy systems it is shown that a Smart Energy Europe energy system is more efficient than what is currently being proposed through PRIMES modelling.

The key difference is EnergyPLAN ability to assess the potential for district heating and cooling allowing for a fully sector coupled Europe that goes beyond electrification but also allows for the use of excess heat from e.g., industry and data centers. This type of modelling is crucial to identify the most cost-efficient solutions for a European energy system.
